BLOC 17 – FPSO GIRASSOL

For the ALTRAD group, work on the Girassol FPSO really began in 2006. After an initial hook-up at Fos-sur-Mer in France, the complete revamping project proceeded, this time off the coast of Angola. More than 3 million hours of work were completed by 2017 on the entire refurbishment project commissioned by Total E&P.

This is an unprecedented project as it represents a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach, encompassing many of Altrad's areas of expertise in industrial services: stripping (in particular ultra-high pressure water blasting), anti-corrosion coatings, passive fire protection, thermal insulation, scaffolding and rope work.

Valued at US$310 million, this unique contract is the first complete refurbishment of an FPSO in operation. Altrad was able to adapt to the many constraints and safety measures: training of local operators, adaptation of equipment, strict compliance with ATEX Zone II regulations. Environmental protection is also one of the keys to this project, with compliance with the ISO 14001 standard (recovery and recycling of abrasives, particularly in ballasts). And it is thanks to the good management of the major aspects of project coordination (day/night activities, ability to manage a massive increase in resources and teams), that the 200 people mobilized, with an average POB of 100 operators, were able to successfully complete this work.
